ECR Doubles, Wethersfield Sunday 6th May

Report from Andy Wilmot

A fine spring day greeted us as we arrived at Wethersfield for this years regional doubles.

This was the first time that the club had hosted a regional event and our thanks to them for hosting a wonderful day, in particular to the ladies for providing food and drinks throughout the day.

Eleven teams gathered for the days competition so we split them into three groups with the top eight going through to the main playoffs and the other three in a plate playoff.

Highlights of the mornings play included a fightback by Terry Whiting and Ryan from the host club, coming back from 2-8 down against Francois Bourquin and Nigel Hills to win 13-10. Nigel and Francois had only dropped 2 points in their two wins, to that point.

In the afternoon knockouts, The Moonwalkers (me and Jean) beat Dave Pearse and Andy in the plate final winning 13-2, but a special mention to Dave’s partner, Andy, who was playing in his first big competition, and not doing too badly at all.

In the main competition, following the quarter finals, Francois and Nigel played Viv Middleton Sams and Dee Austin in one semi with Francois and Nigel running out the winners 13-4 despite a spirited effort by Viv and Dee.
In the other Trevor Blows and his daughter Nikki Parrish played Richard Evans and Scott, with Trevor and Nikki winning that one 13 -5.

So the final was rematch of the group game earlier in the day between Francois/Nigel and Trevor/Nikki. Having won that previous game 13-2, Francois/ Nigel were favourites going into the final and when they cruised into a 10-2 lead, it looked all but over.

Then Trevor /Nikki started to pull back eventually squaring it at 11-11. Francois/Nigel squeezed ahead to 12-11 and had chances in the next end, but two missed shots by Francois and a steady nerve by Trevor to roll in for 2 points and a 13-12 win made a fitting final at the end of the day.

So congrats to Trevor and Nikki, commiserations to Francois and Nigel (particularly since it was Francois’ birthday.

Both teams however have something to look forward to as they will be representing the region at the Champion of Champions Doubles over the weekend of 6th/7th October at Oxshott. On behalf of the region, I would like to wish them all the best for that weekend. Good luck everyone!

As a footnote, during the day, myself and Jean were raising money ahead of our attempt at the Moonwalk next Saturday in aid of breast cancer research. So many many thanks to everyone who donated yesterday adding £56 to our fund. A tremendous effort.
