Formed in 1977, the Thorley Petanque Club as its name implies, had its roots in
Thorley. Indeed, the club played for ten years at the former Green Man Public House.
However following its closure to make way for new housing, the Club was forced to
move to new pastures outside the Thorley area.
Despite losing its base in Thorley, the
club retained its local name and continued to thrive for all ages and ability.
More recently with the tenure of its current base becoming increasingly uncertain, the
club decided to find a new home and were delighted when it was invited to relocate to
the Marne Inn at the Thorley Park Centre.
Club Chairman Ken Kilbey said “Life at
the club has now gone full circle. We are back in Thorley. We could not have asked
for a better solution. The Marne Inn has been absolutely fantastic. We have been
allocated an area of the gardens where we have created two playing areas and we look
forward to becoming part of the local community life.
The club will be playing at the
Marne Inn on Thursday evenings from about 6.30 onwards and Saturday lunch times
(12 – 2) all year round.
Anyone who fancies giving the game a try are more than
welcome to come along and have a go. Help will always be available to guide
newcomers through the simple rules!”
